Hello,
In my yoof I both jumped out of aeroplanes and flew gliders, but the advent of children curtailed my aviation exploits due to time and cost constraints. I'm now in a position to return to the skies, but feel that I would like a little more independence than the typical club structure in the UK affords, so I am looking at paragliding as a new pastime.
There are a few problems though, and although I do not believe them to be insurmountable I wondered if anyone would like to comment
Location. As I said, I'm in the Arse end of the U.K. and opportunities for ridge soaring are none existent. I don't rally want to have to travel great distances to fly, so how realistic is it to operate as a self launching paragliderer using some sort of motor and then to thermal soar? Are the wings efficient enough for thermalling? Can you restart a motor in the air? Can the propellor fold to reduce windage(or is it an insignificant part of the total windage?) Am I asking these questions in the wrong place?
Weight. (Mine!) I'm a 'big boned' six footer, and although I was a skinny wretch in my yoof, I never really weighed much below 80kg. These days, that is a dream, and my current mass is 123kg. Although I'm looking at next summer as my first season and I am actively dieting at the moment, am I living in cloud cuckoo land in even considering this sport.
Timing. As I said above, I'm looking at next season as my first, but is there anything (apart from losing tonnes!) that I can be actively doing over the winter to expidite my active participation early in the new season?
Thanks
I didn't find the right solution from the internet.
