It’s too hot, Alrez thought absent mindedly as he waded into the water. It felt nice, seeping through his thick coat and touching his warm skin. The wolf’s tongue lolled from his mouth, dripping saliva into the lake as he went deeper. He stopped at about where the water reached his knees, half closing his eyes and letting his ears droop in content. His tail even did a soft wag; swishing back and forth just above the water’s surface.
It never even occurred to him that this might not be the best place to get so relaxed and distracted. The heat wasn’t so bad, really, mild at best, but his damned fur just wouldn’t let the heat escape. He’d already shed clumps and still nothing; no sign of relief except for the cool nights and water. The few extra pounds and fat layers didn’t help him stay any cooler, either, especially as he traveled.
So now the wolf stood knee deep in the cool lake, dripping saliva everywhere, just enjoying himself the best he could until the sun went down. But he had come here for another reason; the reason he was so hot and exhausted now. He was hungry (like always) and wanted something to eat. A scent had pulled him to this place, the scent of something tasty, but by the time he got here he was too hot and tired to find it.
Maybe after this little dip, after he caught his breath from his slow amble to the lake, maybe even after a little nap he would find the source of that tasty smell. Right now food was no longer on his mind; a rarity for the vagabond. It seemed that since leaving his home turf food was growing scarcer and his body was suffering the consequences of it. Or perhaps food wasn’t really growing scarcer; he just didn’t have a family to catch his meals and leave him the leftovers. Either way, all this thinking about food was making the mutt hungry. Too bad he was too lazy to move from where he still stood, tail swishing idly, knee deep in the lake.
